How to Set Up an eSIM in 5 Minutes

To set up an eSIM: check your phone is compatible and unlocked, buy a plan to get a QR code, add the eSIM in Settings by scanning it, set it as your data line, and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. It takes about five minutes. Here’s the full walk-through.

Step by step

1. Check compatibility. Your phone must be eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked. Most phones since 2019 qualify.
2. Buy a plan. Choose a country or regional plan in a provider’s app — see our best eSIMs guide. You’ll get a QR code.
3. Add the eSIM. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM. Scan the QR code.
4. Set your data line to the new eSIM; keep your home SIM for calls and texts.
5. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line only. Required abroad — and it won’t trigger home-carrier charges.
